Employment Services "Everyone of us has a right to pursue the life we choose to live"We're grateful every month to be able to meet at Provail-Brainworks every month, but what happens when we're not here? Provail has an extensive collection of services to help those with disabilities, with a special focus on folks who live with cognitive disabilities. The support communications, housing, and job placement in partnership with different Washington state agencies. Eligibility for employment services starts with the Department of Vocational Rehab (DVR). Once DVR decides someone is eligible for services, they contract with an organization like Provail to actually provide those services. Then Provail partners with the client to provide the appropriate services with an employer, support job coaching, provide intensive training, and ultimately allow the client to work independently. Brainworks is one of Provail's programs, and it's the specific building we meet in. Seattle BrainWorks is an innovative program that seeks to support the growth and recovery of individuals living with traumatic brain injuries in our community, with the ultimate goal of helping them obtain and retain employment. They have an extensive calendar of services and events available to those with brain injuries. You can find the calendar here. At the front of the room there is a table with plenty of of flyers for Provail and other organizations supporting folks with disabilities. You can Learn more about Provail here: https://provail.org/ Provail is also always hiring more job coaches as the program grows. If you would like to be a job coach, or if you know someone who might be interested, reach out to Lauren. Candidates ought to have a bachelor's degree or sufficient work experience with individuals with disabilities and community development. Would you like to contact Lauren? Email her at [email protected] Nathalie Farage, UW Synapse
After the meeting, Nathalie sent over some updates on the UW Synapse program. We talked about the Synapse program at the November meeting. You can see more details about that here: https://seattleyass.weebly.com/blog/uw-synapse-program January 27 PEER SUPPORT GROUP (1-2 PM) February 10 PEER SUPPORT GROUP (1-2 PM) February 10 VALENTINE'S DAY SOCIAL (2-3 PM) February 24 PEER SUPPORT GROUP (1-2 PM) March 10 PEER SUPPORT GROUP (1-2 PM) March 24 PEER SUPPORT GROUP (1-2 PM) NEVER BEEN TO UW? Website Transition Over the next two months, we'll be upgrading the YASS website which will make it easier to update. It will also make it easier for more YASS members to contribute to the site if they choose. There are other things we can do to make it easier to read, too.
This process will be mostly invisible until it's done. Once it is done, we'll have a new address: SeattleYASS.com. If you go to the old site, it will just take you over to the new site. There will be no change to the email newsletter. Tech Stuff, for those who like this stuff: We are upgrading to a hosted Wordpress site on HostGator. I got a great deal on a 3 year hosting contract so we're set. The next step is to identify a Wordpress them that will be the most friendly to our members and the deficits we work with each day. Facebook Streaming
One option for future meetings is to Live Stream to Facebook. What this means is that the video and audio of our meetings would be available to folks on Facebook. I would publish a link before hand that someone could click on and join our meeting from elsewhere. The advantage is that if you can't attend a meeting for some reason, you could still see and hear what happens, We can also make a recording available afterwards so if you missed something, you can go back and experience it again. The disadvantage is that some people might not want our meetings accessible to anyone on the internet. There may be privacy concerns, even when we focus on the speakers. The technology is simple enough. All it takes is a cell phone with a camera, so there wouldn't be bulky equipment in the way. What do you think about broadcasting meetings on Facebook? Here is the link to the research survey I mentioned in the meeting: https://blueq.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5u8sE9zCqFN2Yi9 Here are the details from the email they sent me: Dear Participant or Support Group, You are invited to participate in a study on the experience of patients who have had a stroke who have received occupational therapy services in an inpatient rehabilitation setting. This is a research project being conducted by Kathryn Carano, Kylie Dirham, Elliana Kastner, Claire Passmore, Shelby Rozenboom, Taylor Sadler, and Dr. Lisa Bagby students and faculty at Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. The study involves a thirty-question survey as well as a focus group. The focus group will be completed near Omaha, NE and Overland Park, KS. You are free to refuse participation in this research or withdraw your consent and discontinue participation in the project at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. The purpose of this study is to assess patients’ thoughts on having their overall mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being addressed and needs met by occupational therapists in rehabilitation post stroke. For this study, you will complete a thirty-question survey addressing background information and your experiences regarding occupational therapy in an inpatient setting post-stroke. The surveys will be conducted online via this link: https://blueq.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5u8sE9zCqFN2Yi9 It is important to understand this material and utilize the results from the survey to provide more detailed information on meeting psychological needs of patients' after experiencing a stroke. This research could be informative of ways to address psychological needs in inpatient therapy as well as provide a billing code for addressing psychological needs in therapy to receive reimbursement from insurance companies. A possible risk involved in this study involves the potential of discomfort answering certain survey questions as they could cause remembrances of personal, unfortunate or traumatic events. The confidentiality of the survey, the careful design of the survey, and the potential benefits this research may provide are structured to reduce these risks. To ensure confidentiality, the surveys will be sent via a confidential mailing site and once surveys are received they will be kept in a secure drawer in the principle investigator’s office. The survey team will do everything they can to ensure the information provided is kept confidential. At the completion of the survey, you will be given the opportunity to enter a drawing to receive a Creighton University memorabilia item. If you have questions about the survey or the study at any time, you may contact the research team via phone (402) 280-5528 or via email at [email protected]. Focus groups, please feel free to forward this email to your members to expand the breadth of our research.
